Our Story

South Minneapolis.
Since 2017.

Mike grew up in the Standish neighborhood. He still lives there. He founded Southside Barber Lounge in 2017, a traditional shop with a South Minneapolis soul. In 2019, he moved to a bigger space at 48th & Chicago, bringing everything with him: the energy, the skill, the passion, and the philosophy that made the shop worth growing in the first place.

48th & Chicago is where SBL lives now. Same standard. More room to do it right.

“You can't have the word 'Lounge' in your name without being laid back. I tried to bring all the things I love into the place I cut hair daily — and I truly love being at this shop.”

— Mike Saeger, Owner & Barber

The art on the walls was made by friends: former graffiti writers, tattoo artists, local musicians. The music is Minneapolis hip hop and old-school classics: Atmosphere, Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, Outkast, The Roots. When younger clients are in the shop, the playlist adjusts. Someone's always making the case for why the Timberwolves are finally going to do it this year. Nobody's been proven right yet.

Every barber in this shop grew up in South Minneapolis. That's not a detail. That's the whole thing.

Services

The full
treatment.

Every service comes with the details that make it real: hot lather, steamed towels, straight razor. This is the barbershop ritual, not an approximation of it.

Each barber runs their own book through Square, so exact prices and durations can vary slightly by barber; you'll see your barber's current menu before you confirm. Some barbers offer a cash discount. Ranges above reflect the team's current menus.

Detail-oriented. Clients walk out sharper than they came in. The kind of barber you send your dad to. He comes back on his own.

The Atmosphere

A place
to belong.

SBL isn't designed to feel like anything other than what it is: a South Minneapolis barbershop run by people who love the neighborhood they grew up in. Everyone is welcome in these chairs: LGBTQ+ and trans folks included, always. Ask anyone who's sat down here: you'll be met with a good cut and zero judgment.

The soundtrack

Minneapolis hip hop first (Atmosphere, Brother Ali), alongside old-school classics: Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, De La Soul, Outkast, The Roots. Playlist adjusts when younger clients are in the chair.

Art by friends

Every piece on the wall came from someone from the neighborhood: graffiti writers, tattoo artists, musicians. Not bought. Earned.

Local debates

The case for why the Timberwolves are finally going to do it is made approximately weekly. Nobody has been proven right yet.

“We love Pete at Southside!! He’s been cutting my son’s hair for a couple years and he always leaves happy with his haircuts. Pete is so friendly and the whole shop has a great vibe. Can’t recommend enough!”

“Best barber shop in town hands down. Had my hair cut by both Mike and Ryan with great results… I made it a point to make the trip back here to get my haircut before my wedding. They’re that good.”

New Here?

First time in? Here’s the deal.

What if I don’t know what to ask for?

Say that. Show a photo, describe what you don’t want, or just say “clean it up.” Translating is our job. You’ll leave with something that works.

Do you take walk-ins?

Booking guarantees your chair; each barber runs their own book through Square. Rolling the dice on a walk-in? Call ahead and we’ll tell you straight whether there’s an open chair.

My kid gets squirmy. Is that a problem?

We’ve cut hair through wiggles, negotiations, and mid-cut snack breaks. Kids haircuts are for ages 5 to 12. Book their cut back-to-back with your own and make it one trip.

How early should I show up?

Five minutes is plenty. Your chair is held for you. Fair warning though: sometimes we’re still finishing up the client before you when your time hits. We try to keep that rare, but hey, stuff happens.

Cash or card?

Both. Booking and payment run through Square, and cash prices are listed right on each barber’s Square menu, usually a couple bucks kinder.
